Men against Violence
"It's not only that men have used violence to maintain power and control over women, children and other men.
Men have learned to think of power as our ability to dominate and control the world, the people around us, and our own unruly emotions...we learn that to be a man means having some sort of power and control. Most men are not violent, but most of us feel we have to perform and be on top at least somewhere in our lives."
- Michael Kaufman, Cracking the Armour
The MLS Male Room is a celebration of the feminist man, and a resource page to assist other men to connect with men, other male self defense teachers, or other mens’ groups taking on the work of activism against violence against women.
The role of male leaders in self defense training is a subject of controversy, for many in the women’s self defense movement. This controversy can be just as complex as are topics regarding gender roles and socialization in our culture in general. Yet, if we do not honestly address these issues and present a forum for honest discussion and debate, there is a great loss to those who wrestle with questions regarding dominance, abuse, and violence.
