Accountability
Personal responsibility for actions, non-actions, and choices. This term in used in the MLS context: the theory that all people have choices and influence in all situations in which they find themselves. The principle of accountability includes a commitment to taking action so that personal values are fulfilled--such as rejecting aggression and violence. It is also important in the realization that all perpetrators of assault are choosing their behaviors. As we personally choose effects in all relationships, we have a great influence on situation outcomes. We are accountable for outcomes, but not responsible for them, as we do not control other actors, or all environmental factors.

Aggression
An energetic model for an Expression that crosses a Boundary. Such behavior can be appropriate or inappropriate, effective or ineffective. Shaking hands (crossing the boundary of touch) is aggressive. For progressive self defense training, aggressive behaviors are considered common, natural, and often inoffensive.

Apathy/Inertia
A state of being in which energy is being repressed. Often indicates Denial, and blocking of interaction or possibilities for growth.

Apologies
Asking forgiveness. As a semantic pattern this habit is dysfunctional. Over-use of apology involves deference and a misguided sense of personal Power. This can be a conditioned habit with people who apologize for a wide range of effects over which they have no influence. Misuse of apology tends to bleed personal power.

Assault Stages
Target; Test and/or Threaten; Touch. The three stages of progression in an assault situation.

Assault Components
The variables necessary for assault, including a victim, an abuser, and a situation of Isolation over time.

Assault Triggers
Specific behavioral signals which indicate to an abuser that a person is vulnerable, and encourage assault. Assault triggers are often interpreted as a "green light" for Escalation. Examples: excess anger, panic or nervousness, unconscious compliance, a pattern of helpfulness.

Assault Inhibitors
Behaviors and components of Expression which indicate that a woman is self-aware and feels competent to take action on her own behalf. Inhibitors are generally interpreted as a "red light" for Escalation. Examples: direct eye contact, controlled emotional response, direct speech.

Assertion
An energetic model for Expression in which the Rights of self and others are acknowledged. An effective Response Style.

Autonomy
A self-governing quality or state of being. A state of being self-directed or self-determined.

Authority Figures
People who hold command.

Authority
The power and status associated with decision-making and privilege; a conclusive statement. Internal authority (the ability to choose for one’s self) is critically important for self-defense.
